We had such an overwhelming response to our first firefighter fitness diatribe that we decided to do an archive.  If you want to see old rants and firefighter specific workouts go to Firefighter Fitness archives.

 Utilizing Your Time on Duty

How many times have you been on duty and your workout time has been interrupted?  It's the nature of the job that this is going to happen.  But fear not!  We have ways of dealing with this.

At my house, we pretty much know that 1600 is going to be workout time.  This gives us enough time to get the workout done and get ready to prepare supper.  Of course, what always happens at 1555 - that's right, a call.  So here's what we've done.

Our workday starts at 0800. So at around 0755 we'll pick about four exercises.  We usually use the FitDeck for this.  We recently added the Kettlebell and Firefighter Fit Deck cards to the regular Bodyweight FitDeck.  We'll then decide how the day's game is going to go.  Sometimes it is just completing the cards every hour on the hour.  Obviously if we're on a call that hour doesn't count.  Sometimes we'll compete to see who can do more of the exercises throughout the day.  This can be interesting in multi-company houses, because we won't see each other all day.  There will just be little nasty notes on the white board about how many we've done and how the other company is a bunch of wussies!

This has a couple of great benefits.  First you're not pounding yourself into the ground in one sitting.  Your metabolism will be jacked up throughout the day.  During the mid-afternoon time when most of us are ready to take a nap or drink some coffee, this is a great pick-me-up.  It's kind of like revving the engine.  And if you miss your regular workout time, you've done something throughout the day to make up for it.  Here is what we did our last day:

30 Kettlebell swings

20 Star-Jumpers

20 Staggered Push-ups (explosive)

20 Tactical Lunges

Every hour on the hour.   It was a great workout day.  We managed to get 0800/0900/1100/1400 in.  The other hours we were on calls or doing inspections.  We did manage to get a full workout in at 1600 this day also.  So give it a try and let me know what you think.  - J

Maybe this thought will help...:

Working out on duty = getting paid to be in shape for the job!
